Alternatives to Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)

There are viable alternatives to the proposed 34th St Transitway that meet all of the DOT's transit goals for 34th Street without eliminating residential access to 34th Street.

Transportation System Management ("TSM"):

  • Meets all of the DOT's goals for improving transit time on 34th Street.

  • Is significantly less expensive than the proposed Transitway.

  • Insures curbside access for 34th Street's community.

  • Can create bus-only lanes from 7 - 10 am and 2 - 7 pm Monday to Friday and allow commerical and drop off curb access during non-peak times as has been done with Select Bus Service (SBS) on 1st and 2nd Avenues.

  • Read the excerpt from the 34th Street Transit Corridor Alternative Analysis (PDF) to learn more about TSM.

  • Tell the DOT that TSM should be considered for 34th Street; email Kate Mikuliak, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Transitway project (kmikuliak@dot.nyc.gov) and Margaret Forgione, Manhattan Commissioner for the DOT (mforgione@dot.nyc.gov) to state that TSM must be considered.
