Mayhem from 30th to 40th Streets

With the Transitway's diversion west-bound Midtown Tunnel traffic and east-bound Lincoln Tunnel traffic from 34th Street, here's what to expect:

  • Cars and trucks clogging residential and business side streets north and south of 34th Street.
  • Delivery and service trucks crowding north-south avenues and the side streets because they no longer have direct access to buildings and stores along stretches of 34th Street..
  • Impediments to pedestrians along avenues’ sidewalks where truck loading and unloading will occur.
  • Traffic tie-ups at intersections such as 33rd Street and Park Avenue, where barriers for the Park Avenue vehicular tunnel block west-bound traffic, resulting in increased traffic on Lower Park Avenue as drivers seek alternative cross-town routes.

And expect the same kind of impacts on the West Side, where the Transitway will divert east-bound traffic from the Lincoln Tunnel!

As the map for a segment of the Transitway shows, the Above Ground Subway's impacts will extend well beyond 34th Street!
