DOT's Transitway essentially denies residents, professionals and business owners' access to the entrances to their homes, offices and shops. Cars and taxis will not be permitted in the bus lanes so they can't drop people at lobby, store and restaurant entrances, especially difficult for the handicapped and the many elderly living on 34th Street. Deliveries will have to be diverted away from 34th Street to avenues and side streets and then carried to lobby and service entrances that are adjacent to the Transitway. For the many physicians in medical buildings along the street, patients will no longer have direct access to offices, including those in critical and oncology care.
Here are photographs of a sampling of the "Doors of 34th Street" that will be blocked by the Transitway. They include apartment, service, and medical building entrances and garages whose only access is from 34th Street.
